Islamic Sharia and the Limits of Democracy

By Saiful Mujani

Democracy has limits in accommodating these antagonistic primordial aspirations. The limits of democracy must be realized by both democrats and by pro-sharia political groups who struggle for their political aspirations in democratic ways. Democracy cannot accommodate the power that will kill democracy itself.

I think the issue of contention or misunderstanding with regard to islamic sharia and democracy by writers on this issue is the clear understanding of what is sharia those that sharia concerned their obligation to sharia, and democracy on the other hand, it’s position and perception in islam and how muslim should view it and practise it within the framework of islamic sharia. It is good that we should understand that, islamic sharia encompasses all aspects of human life and the moment you accept islam, sharia is your guiding principle in all what you do. So, the issue is this it is not sharia that is part of democracy but it is democracy that is part or an aspect in many aspects of islamic sharia.
