Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahab (1703-1791)

By Luthfi Assyaukanie

Abd al-Wahab’s works have a thick theological nuance (ílm tauhid) and therefore many people consider him more as a theologian rather than a faqih (master of Islamic jurisprudence) or mufassir (master of Quranic interpretation) even though he also wrote several books on fiqh and tafsir. They all relate to the attitude and spirit of Abd al-Wahab in his drive to purify Islamic teaching. To him, Islamic purification cannot be implemented as long as the matters of aqeeda (belief) are polluted.

AS-Salamu alejkum,

What I have read in this article which you have posted about Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahab is just oposite what I have read in book Wahabism; a critical essay from Halid Akhbar. In your writing I did not find any source in comparision to above mentioned book. Therefore, if you would like to be more sound in such sensible topic please be more serious.

As-Salamu-^Alaykum

It should be pointed out that Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahab and his followers hold a belief that is different from that of the messenger of Allah(sallalahu ^alayhi wa sallam), the salaf-whom they claim to be the heirs of, and basically ahlus-sunnah wal-jumah. Their belief entails resembling Allah Ta ^Ala to his creation.

They go further and claim that whoever does not share their ill creed is not a muslim, and it is permissable to shed their blood, take their belongings, and enslave their women and children. They only come to about 2.5 million in number yet they regard the majority of muslims to be kafirs. It is because of this extreme belief that they have slaughterd millions of muslims throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Salam all,

The concept of Unity is fine. But it is framed in a canvas that is, on the face of it, pluralistic in nature, ergo this World and its inhabitants. It is a thread of the Divine that draws everything together, whether you are talking about the Blessed Prophet or to the smallest creature in nature. There is nothing new that this Muhammad Abdul Wahhab has added to the corpus of Islamic wisdom. Indeed, there has in fact been a subtraction. This whitewash article is truly disappointing.
