The Theological Basis of Inter-Religious Brotherhood
By Budhy Munawar-Rachman
Manifesting brotherhood – in the religious terminology known as silat-u ‘l-rahm (inter-giving love and affection) - is an obligation of every religious community. Usually this term is used for family and group relations, however, it can be extended to a humanitarian framework. The basis for this silaturrrahmi is the notion of brotherhood (ukhuwwah) and it is generally used in the context of a single religious group (ukhuwwah islamiyyah); but it can also be expanded to include human brotherhood (ukhuwwah insaniyyah or ukhuwwah basyariyyah).

Having read your illuminating and interesting article I have to say that it is a good effort to forge a constructive dialogue, which will enhance mutual understanding between the denominations in religious-ethnically dividided society such as, Indonesia. Your sustained theological argument on ‘equality before God’ is not unique though, since Qur’an itself has diffuse articulation of such notion. But what concern me among other things is how to translate this divinely revealed article into action, which can create an awareness of inclusiveness?
Without due respect, I do recognise the concerted efforts made by Paramadina toward that end, but unfortunately it doesn’t sufficiently directed toward the file and rank of the people. In my view they are -the file and rank- or those who much in need of this endavour.
Last but not least, I wish to appreciate this website in bringing about the enlighthened discussion to counter the alleged incompatibility of Islam with the ever increasing challenges of modern world. Your works is much appreciated.
